Blue C Sushi is already innovative with it’s revolving belt that makes the raw fish appear to be alive and swimming right in front of you (on a nice pad of rice). On a recent company lunch there we were pleasantly surprised to see some QR codes (QR = Quick Reference) inviting us to interact with Blue C on Facebook and Twitter. Check out the positives (and one minus) of this campaign!
Company | Blue C Sushi |
Call to Action | Scan these QR codes to Friend us on Facebook and Follow Us on Twitter! (Found printed out on a piece of paper, taped next to the entrance.) |
Date | Winter 2010 |
Description | This campaign uses a QR code to point mobile phone users to Facebook and Twitter pages |
Mobile Technologies Used | QR code, mobile web, device detection |
QR code
|
These QR codes work great and get the job done – scan the code, and get taken to Facebook or Twitter so that you can interact with Blue C. However, we had to dock one star here because scanngin the QR Code pointing to Blue C’s Facebook page didn’t send us to a mobile-optimized webpage. |
Social Network Marketing
|
Blue C Sushi does an excellent job embracing social media and engaging their customers to interact on their mobile phones with their Facebook and Twitter pages. |
User Experience
|
As mentioned above, the QR code for the Facebook page pointed to http://www.facebook.com/####, which didn’t detect that our devices were mobile phones, and consequently, didn’t send us to the mobile version. Facebook certainly should have this down by now, so minus one point for them. More importantly, whoever set up this campaign for Blue C Sushi should have checked this. It’s EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that QR Codes point to MOBILE WEB PAGES because MOBILE PHONES WILL BE SCANNING QR CODES, which means that mobile phones get the link and will click on it. (Sorry for yelling, but so many people make this mistake!).
The Twitter QR Code point to their normal Twitter page, but fortunately Twitter has great device detection, and immediately sent us to a mobile version. Also, the signage was printed out (in color) on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper: didn’t look very polished or professional. |
Bonus Star
|
We’re throwing in an extra star because of an additional QR code on the sheet of paper that facilitates mobile users’ checkins on Foursquare, Gowalla, and Yelp. (See more in our video below.) |
Blue C Sushi ranks very highly for embracing social media and incorporating mobile. However, they didn’t quite follow through with a seamless user experience.
